Full-Time Firefighter Opportunity
Jefferson-Como Fire Protection District (JCFPD) is proud to serve the communities of Como, Jefferson, and the surrounding areas of Park County, Colorado. Our members are dedicated to protecting life, property, and the environment through professional emergency services, training, and community engagement.
From structural firefighting to wildland response and emergency medical calls, our firefighters serve in a challenging and rewarding rural mountain environment.
We are currently seeking qualified candidates for a Full-Time Firefighter position.
Position Overview
The Firefighter is responsible for responding to emergency incidents including structure fires, wildland fires, motor vehicle accidents, rescue incidents, and medical calls. Firefighters also participate in training, equipment maintenance, community outreach, and station operations.
This position operates on a 48 hours on / 96 hours off schedule and works as part of a dedicated team committed to professionalism, safety, and service.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Be an active volunteer member of Jefferson-Como Fire Protection District
- Possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License
- Successfully complete:
- Written examination
- Physical agility test
- Oral board interview
- Pass a background check
No certifications are required at time of hire.
Certification Requirements After Hiring
The selected candidate will be required to obtain the following certifications within timelines established by the Fire Chief (not to exceed one year unless otherwise approved):
- Firefighter I
- Hazardous Materials Operations
- ICS-100/200/700/800
- Wildland Firefighter (S-130 / S-190 – Red Card eligible)
Training will be coordinated through the District.
Physical Requirements
Firefighters must be capable of performing physically demanding tasks in emergency environments.
Candidates must successfully complete the District physical agility test which includes:
- A 3-mile walk with a 45-pound pack
- Completed within 48 minutes
- Additional job-related tasks designed to simulate firefighting activities
Hiring Process
The Jefferson-Como Fire Protection District uses a structured hiring process to ensure fairness, transparency, and the selection of the best candidate for the position.
The hiring process includes the following steps:
1. Application Submission
Applicants must submit:

- Copies of certifications (if applicable)
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
2. Written Examination
Candidates must complete a standardized written test.
Minimum passing score: 80%
3. Physical Agility Test
Candidates must complete the District physical test.
Maximum allowed time: 9 minutes
4. Shift Evaluations
Candidates will complete evaluation shifts with department crews. These shifts allow the department to observe teamwork, professionalism, and work ethic.
5. Oral Board Interview
Candidates who successfully complete testing will participate in an oral board interview conducted by experienced firefighters and chiefs from outside agencies.
6. Final Selection
The Fire Chief will review all evaluation materials and make the final hiring decision.
