DO YOU THINK THAT YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER? Volunteer Forms were updated May 18, 2006. One was changed out and others were added.
Jefferson-Como Fire Protection District is always in need of able bodied volunteers to join our ranks. The minimum age of a volunteer is twenty-one (21). There are a number of other requirements that you must meet in order to be eligible to apply to be a volunteer. Additionally, there are many obligations on your time once you have been accepted as a volunteer. We will be happy to provide you with a general idea of what life is like for a JCFPD volunteer. Some of the basic information is covered below. We mention some of the benefits and some of the responsibilities that accrue to the District volunteers. 1. This is a volunteer job without pay. 2. You will be required to use your own vehicle to travel either to a fire station to ride in a fire district vehicle to the emergency scene, or to drive directly to the scene yourself. If you travel in excess of five miles in your vehicle on any one emergency call the District will provide you with 5 gallons of gasoline to partially compensate you for wear, tear and gasoline used from your own automobile. 3. You will receive many hours of training in emergency preparedness becoming a firefighter, an Emergency First Responder, and qualifying for CPR Certification. 4. You will learn how to participate in fire ground activities, extricate accident victims from vehicles, how to direct traffic or stop traffic around an accident scene, and even how to help manage the landing zone for helicopters responding to emergencies in our District. 5. You will have an excellent view of the fireworks in Como on the 4th. of July. (Right under them, while keeping them from starting a wildland fire.) 6. You will be required to be on scene on a minimum number of calls each year to maintain your active status. 7. You will be required to attend a minimum number of training hours each year to maintain your active status. 8. Once earned, you will be required to maintain your certifications to maintain your active status. 9. If all of your requirements are met and kept up to date for a period of 10 years, you will be vested in a retirement fund. Normal retirement is 20 years of service and age 55. The retirement fund is funded by the State with JCFPD contributions 10. You will have the unforgettable and priceless experience of helping others when they are truly in need.
