CONTROLLED BURN

A Controlled Burn is any burn other than a campfire.  (Described on Burn Permit)  that will be used to discard construction materials, ranch debris, or old buildings.  Controlled Burns require a Burn Permit.  NOTE:  Burning of any Hazardous Materials is PROHIBITED,

Controlled Burns must be reported to Park County Communications at 836-4121 PRIOR to the Burn.  Name, physical address, type of materials, burn period and Burn Permit number must be supplied.

The person(s) doing a Controlled Burn accepts FULL RESPONSIBILITY for control and containment of such Burn (i.e. water supply, extinguishers, hand tools and equipment).   Fire District personnel and equipment can be contracted at current U.S. Forest Service rates; however, FULL RESPONSIBILITY will remain with the person(s) initializing the Controlled Burn.

Controlled Burns will not be allowed during a “Burn Ban.”

Emergency Vehicle access to the Controlled Burn area must be adequate (easily accessible).

Any emergency response by the Fire District due to lack of control, loss of control, or burning of hazardous material will be subject to the cost of suppression, (U.S. Forest Service rates) as well as any other associated costs (i.e. Equipment, damage or loss, fuel, food.)

The Fire Chief is authorized to disallow or extinguish any Burn at any time.

CAMP FIRES DO NOT NEED A PERMIT – CAMP FIRES ARE O.K. WHEN THERE IS NO BURN BAN.

Our goal is to promote burning safety, not to prohibit burning.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

Burn Ban Information Download

The following information is designed to clarify the “Burning” classifications as defined by the Park County Sheriff and area Fire Districts.

DEFINITIONS OF BURNING CLASSIFICATIONS

RESTRICTED:

Fires restricted during a Restricted Burn Status include, but are not limited to, trash, bon fires, and special event fires.   These require a burn permit (refer to burn permit for conditions).  A burn permit must be obtained from your local fire department.  Campfires are allowed without a permit, and must be no larger than a 30” diameter, 8” depth, with no vegetation in the pit, or in an area 3 feet from the pit and have no longer than a 2’ flame height.  Care concerning fire should be emphasized at all times.  Posted “fire signs” during these conditions will read “use caution with fire.”

RED FLAG:

Watch, or Warning, is issued by the National Weather Service.  A Red Flag is not a Burn Ban but rather a Watch, or Warning, concerning the conditions in different areas of the State.  Jefferson-Como Fire Protection District is in Zone 208.

                        Watch:            Drying Conditions

                                                Fire danger moderate to high

                                                Moderate to high winds

                                                Possibility of dry lightning

                        Warning:        Dry Conditions

                                                Fire danger high

                                                High winds

                                                Hot temperatures

                                                Dry Lightning

NO FIRES:  (BURN BAN)

No fires are allowed during a Burn Ban Status, with the following exceptions:  white gas or propane-fueled lanterns, stoves, and barbeques with a flame length no greater than ½” long.

When District or County and possibly other Burn Bans are in effect, smoking of tobacco products will be confined to the interior of buildings or vehicles.  The use of a chain saw or gasoline engines, like generators or motorcycles, without spark arresters is prohibited.

Any violations concerning Burn Bans are subject to fines to extinguish the fire, or the cost for apparatus/personnel stand-by.  These fines are in accordance with Federal Forest AD rates.

BURN BANS ARE ISSUED BY ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ENTITIES:

District-            A District Burn Ban is issued by the Fire Chief, if the Fire Chief determines that dry or extreme conditions exist.  The Fire Chief will notify the Sheriff’s Office of the District Burn Ban.

Federal Forest Service-

This Burn Ban is issued by the Federal Forest Service (USPS) regarding National Forest lands.

The USPS usually starts with a restriction on open fires, i.e. campfires in designated fire pits only.  They proceed to a Burn Ban when conditions worsen.

Pueblo Dispatch Board of Directors meet and make recommendations regarding a Burn Ban on –

                    USFS lands

                    BLM lands

                    County lands

Governor (State)-

This Burn Ban is issued fro the Office of the Governor and affects all State and private lands.  The Sheriff’s Department enforces a Governor’s Burn Ban.
